He started as an Army Reservist with the 414th Civil Affairs Battalion in Utica, New York from 1999 to 2002, then served on active duty as a mental health specialist in Fort Hood, Texas from 2002-2006. In July 2004, he was attached to the 115th Combat Support Hospital and served on a 12-month deployment to Abu Ghraib Prison, Iraq. While there, he provided mental health treatment to deployed troops, coalition forces, and Iraqi detainees.
Military awards received during his service include the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, 3 Army Achievement Medals, 2 Army Commendation Medals, a Global War on Terrorism Deployment Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.
Following an honorable discharge in 2006, he relocated to Miami, Florida and was employed at the Miami Veterans Administration Medical Center from 2007-2013. Anthony has a Master of Science degree in psychology from Carlos Albizu University, and is currently pursuing a Master of Social Work degree at Barry University.
His interest in creative writing began with journalism classes in high school, as well writing for the yearbook and school newspaper. He did not return to writing until he moved to Miami and was encouraged to do so by close friend and local poet, Ricki Dorn. He placed 3rd nationally in the VA’s National Creative Arts Festival in the Patriotic Writing Category, with a poem about his first day in Iraq.
He has participated in several local writing workshops, including the Writers Institute at Miami Dade College and VONA/Voices Workshop at the University of Miami with poets such as Elizabeth Alexander, Robert Pinsky, Li-Young Lee, and Campbell McGrath.
